Rishi Sunak did not criticize Suella Braverman’s claim that rough sleeping is sometimes a “lifestyle choice” for homeless people, but stopped short of repeating her comments.

During a visit to the Bacton Gas Terminal in Norfolk on Monday (6 November), the prime minister was pressed on whether the Home Secretary’s language was “offensive”.

Ms. Braverman has been criticized by opposition politicians and charities after suggesting she wants to place restrictions on the use of tents on public streets.

“Of course there is more to do and we’ll keep going so that nobody has to sleep rough on our streets,” Mr. Sunak said.

Rishi Sunak refrained from criticizing Suella Braverman’s statement regarding rough sleeping being a “lifestyle choice” for homeless individuals, although he chose not to echo her words. This occurred during a visit to the Bacton Gas Terminal in Norfolk on Monday (6 November), where the prime minister faced inquiries about the Home Secretary’s potentially “offensive” language. Opposition politicians and charitable organizations have condemned Braverman for her proposal to impose limitations on the use of tents on public streets. In response, Sunak emphasized the ongoing efforts to ensure that no one has to sleep rough on the streets.

The controversy arose when Braverman’s comments regarding rough sleeping being a “lifestyle choice” sparked outrage and criticism. Many argue that such a statement reflects a lack of understanding and empathy towards the complex circumstances that lead individuals to become homeless. While Sunak did not explicitly address the controversy, his decision to distance himself from Braverman’s comments suggests a potential disagreement or discomfort with her perspective.

During the visit to the Bacton Gas Terminal, the prime minister faced questions regarding the offensive nature of Braverman’s language. However, Sunak did not directly respond to the inquiry, leaving his stance on the matter ambiguous. This lack of clarity may leave some questioning his position on the issue and whether he shares Braverman’s views.

Opposition politicians and charities have criticized Braverman’s proposal to restrict the use of tents on public streets. They argue that such measures fail to address the root causes of homelessness and instead further marginalize and stigmatize vulnerable individuals. The discussion surrounding these restrictions highlights the ongoing debate on how best to support and assist homeless populations.

In response to the controversy, Sunak emphasized the government’s commitment to tackling homelessness and ensuring that no one has to sleep rough on the streets. While his statement lacks specific details on the actions that will be taken, it signals an intention to continue working towards solutions. The issue of homelessness remains a pressing concern, and it is essential for policymakers to approach it with empathy, understanding, and evidence-based strategies.
