Workers at Starbucks locations in New York City have filed 14 new labor complaints, accusing the company of violating state labor law. The complaints allege that Starbucks is not complying with New York’s Fair Workweek Law, which requires companies to provide employees with consistent work schedules, notify them of any changes, and offer compensation if schedules are altered.
The union Starbucks Workers United, which represents many Starbucks locations across the country, has been vocal about understaffing issues at multiple outlets. Since the beginning of the year, both union and nonunion Starbucks employees have filed over 70 labor complaints against the company.
The new complaints coincide with a nationwide strike organized by Starbucks Workers United. The strike is taking place on Red Cup Day, one of the busiest events for the company.
Starbucks has consistently denied any wrongdoing and has fought against every complaint of unfair labor practices. However, the company has recently announced a 3% pay increase for both union and nonunion employees as part of efforts to improve wages and conditions in many Starbucks locations.
