Israel’s Military Response to Hamas Attacks in Gaza
As the humanitarian crisis worsens and Palestinian civilian casualties rise, Israel’s military response to the Hamas attacks raises questions about its objectives. While the soundbite of “destroying Hamas” may be politically appealing, it is not a practical military objective as an ideology cannot be destroyed. Nevertheless, Israel has declared war on Hamas and is determined to resolve the issue at any cost.
The current ground offensive on Gaza City has led residents to seek sanctuary in the south, but many Palestinians find this option not credible as the IDF is also bombing the south of Gaza. Despite the risks, numerous civilians have decided to stay in Gaza City.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu seems focused on seizing Gaza City, and although it may prove difficult to prevent Hamas from launching surprise attacks from the extensive tunnel network under Gaza City, there is an air of inevitability that the IDF will eventually achieve its objective.
The conflict has caused devastating damage to Gaza City’s infrastructure, further worsening the region’s already bleak economic outlook. The mounting casualties resulting from IDF military action are alarming, but the ultimate toll from disease, lack of resources, and medicines may surpass these figures.
While international diplomatic pressure calls for a ceasefire, the influence of the international community in this conflict remains uncertain. Finding an enduring solution to the conflict requires political resolve and a commitment from the international community, led by the US and Saudi Arabia.
Given the apparent irreconcilable positions of the warring factions, achieving regional peace will require determined, brave, imaginative, and committed engagement. However, previous generations have failed to commit the necessary energy and political capital, leading to the escalation of violence and destruction that define this conflict.
War is brutal and indiscriminate, and the failure of political resolve has tragic consequences. As we commemorate Remembrance Day to honor those who have lost their lives in war, we must reflect on the horrors of war and strive for peace.
Politicians may declare war, but the consequences are felt by both civilians and the military. The devastating consequences of failed politics serve as a reminder that the road to peace, no matter how difficult, is far preferable to the consequences of war.
