Late actor Matthew Perry, the hunt for the missing Titanic submersible, and summer blockbuster Barbie were among the most searched topics of 2023, according to Google. Matthew Perry’s death in October was the most searched celebrity death, surpassing Tina Turner, Sinead O’Connor, Ken Block, and Jerry Springer. The search for the Titanic submersible in June ranked second, following the Israel-Hamas war. Barbie was the most searched film, followed by Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer.

Other notable top 10s included Turkey’s devastating earthquake, a trio of hurricanes, mass shootings, India’s moon landing, and conflict in Sudan. NFL star Damar Hamlin and actor Jeremy Renner were the most searched people, while Nicola Bulley’s disappearance and subsequent death gained significant interest. Jeremy Renner topped the list of actors, and Shakira was the most searched musician. The Last Of Us and Hogwarts Legacy were popular TV shows and games, respectively.
