Airbus regrets to confirm that an A350-900 operated by Japan Airlines was involved in an accident during flight JAL516 from Sapporo New Chitose Airport to Haneda International Airport shortly after 17:47 (local time) on 02 January 2024. All 367 passengers and 12 crew members on-board evacuated the aircraft.

The incident occurred during the final approach to Haneda International Airport, when the aircraft encountered severe turbulence and lost control. The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation.

Immediately after the incident, emergency services were dispatched to the scene and all passengers and crew members were safely evacuated. Several passengers reported minor injuries and were treated at the airport’s medical facility.

Japan Airlines has set up a dedicated hotline for affected passengers and their families to provide support and assistance. The airline is also working closely with Airbus and the relevant authorities to determine the cause of the accident and prevent similar incidents in the future.

Airbus expresses its sincere condolences to all those affected by this unfortunate accident. The safety and well-being of its passengers and crew members remain the top priority for the company.

Japan Airlines has temporarily suspended all flights involving the A350-900 aircraft until further notice. Passengers with upcoming flights on this aircraft will be accommodated on alternative flights or offered refunds.

The investigation into the accident is being conducted by the Japan Transport Safety Board (JTSB), with assistance from Airbus and other relevant parties. It is expected to take several weeks or even months to determine the exact cause of the incident.

Airbus will continue to cooperate fully with the investigation and provide any necessary support and information. The company remains committed to ensuring the highest standards of safety and reliability for its aircraft.

As the investigation progresses, further updates will be provided by Japan Airlines and Airbus to keep the public informed of any significant developments.
