Meta‘s “Twitter Killer” is now available in Europe.
Threads, Meta‘s social media competitor to X, launched in European Union countries on Thursday.
Some European users have eagerly awaited Threads’ arrival overseas. Meta teased the launch earlier in the week with a countdown timer on the EU version of Threads’ website.
Meta, the owner of Facebook, announced when it launched Threads in July that it was holding off on expanding to the EU due to concerns about meeting the region’s strict regulatory requirements.
The European launch is expected to bring in a large number of users for the new social media site, which has been struggling to maintain an active user base.
Threads’ initial barebones state disappointed many users. Even those who wanted to switch from X to Threads were disappointed by the lack of a web version at launch.
Since July, Threads has implemented a web version and made changes to search functionality and topic tags. The platform has even started to surpass X in terms of downloads from app stores.
However, X remains one of the internet’s top platforms with millions of daily active users. This is partly due to Threads’ decision to downplay news and controversial topics.
