TAOS, N.M. – Known in her local market as Mattress Mary and an advocate for local businesses, Mary Domito has opened a new concept store in her hometown.
Domito been working on her concept store here since late 2021 when she committed to buying a former restaurant building here.
The new 24,000-square-foot Taos Lifestyle store will open for business Friday, but this isn’t just any home store. Instead, the store offers a range of mattresses, top of bed, sleep accessories, furniture, gifts and apparel, and also has a dedicated concert and event space.
“My dream has been to create a space where people want to come and hang out,” Domito said. “There is a vibe in Taos – a Taos lifestyle – and that’s what this space reflects. This isn’t just shopping; it’s a unique shopping experience and immersion into the Taos Lifestyle.”
The restoration and redesign of the building, which is now connected to her former store, cost $1.4 million.
Distinctly local with a Taos feel, the store is the exclusive retailer of Scott Carlson Pottery and has a Lucky’s Tacos restaurant onsite. Lucky’s is a staple in Taos.
Domito, known locally as “Mattress Mary,” acquired the historic El Taoseño Restaurant building that sits on 1.83 acres during the pandemic.
A part of the Taos home furnishings retail landscape since 2004 when Domito opened Sleep Sanctuary, a mattress retail store, she expanded in 2008 with Toto Home. In 2012, the two stores consolidated and rebranded as Taos Lifestyle and moved into a wider offering of furnishings and accessories. In 2015, she opened Alamosa Home Furnishings in Colorado and followed that up with Sleep & Dream in Santa Fe, N.M. She sold her share of the sleep store to her business partner and in 2019 opened Mattress Mary’s Mountain Lifestyle.
“I hope everyone stops by and enjoys the new space,” Domito said. “And I hope people make this a regular place to spend time and enjoy our fabulous Taos Lifestyle.”
The company will host an official grand opening event Nov. 18.
