“Robert J. O’Neill: Obstruction for Norfolk’s Military Brewery?”

NORFOLK, Va. — A former U.S. Navy SEAL who claims to have shot Osama bin Laden is facing opposition in Virginia over alleged racist and homophobic remarks. Robert J. O’Neill, who has a stake in Armed Forces Brewing Company and serves as its brand ambassador, has drawn controversy for his social media comments and a police report alleging he used a racial slur. The military-themed brewery, located near the largest Navy base in the country, has faced criticism for its conservative branding and lack of diversity in ownership. The local planning commission has recommended denying permits for the brewery, and the City Council is set to vote on the matter soon. The brewery has threatened to sue if its application is rejected.

The nonbinding vote by the planning commission came after significant public opposition and the lack of support from the local neighborhood association. Critics argue that the brewery is not a good fit for the city and does not reflect the diversity of the military or the community. The controversy also involves shareholder and advisor Gretchen Smith, who has made controversial social media posts. The company defends its right to express political views and insists that it welcomes everyone. The CEO of Armed Forces Brewing Company stated that the goal of the brewery is to support the military community and employ veterans.

Despite these assurances, opponents remain skeptical and continue to raise concerns. The City Council will soon make a decision on the brewery’s permits.
