Fundraising concert

Chico-based band Clan Dyken and Joanne Rand with Tim Randles will perform Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Historic Eagle House, 139 Second St., Eureka.
In support of the 32nd annual Thanksgiving “Food and Supply Run” to the Big Mountain/Black Mesa region of the Dine’ (Navajo) Nation, Dyken returns to Humboldt County.
Those attending the concert are asked to bring hand tool, blanket coat donations. Items should be in excellent condition. Hand tools that are most helpful include axes, mauls, wedges and saws. Gloves, flashlights and batteries are also needed, and chainsaws are in high demand.
Admission is $15 (sliding scale) at the door.
Marsh trip
The Redwood Region Audubon Society will present a free guided field trip at the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday from 8:30 to 11 a.m.
Bring binoculars and meet trip leader Carol Wilson at the end of South I Street (Klopp Lake) in Arcata to enjoy easy-to-walk trails and an opportunity to view a diverse range of species. Shorebirds can especially be abundant at this time, so be on the lookout for avocets, sandpipers, yellow-legs, godwits, curlews and multi-species murmurations as well as the waterfowl species that call the marsh home in the winter.
Tour the marsh
Friends of the Arcata Marsh will sponsor a free tour of the Arcata Marsh and Wildlife Sanctuary on Saturday.
Meet leader Lynn Jones at 2 p.m. in the lobby of the Interpretive Center on South G Street for a 90-minute walk on the geology, geography and history of the marsh. This event is held rain or shine. For more information, call 707-826-2359.
Birding tour
The Redwood Region Audubon Society will offer a free guided birding tour at Humboldt Bay National Wildlife Refuge on Sunday from 9 to 11 a.m.
Meet leader Ralph Bucher at the Visitor Center for this two-mile walk along a wide, flat trail that is packed gravel and easily accessible. Just outside of town, this refuge offers astounding and easy access to tidally-influenced habitats including mudflats, riparian vegetation, conifers and a bay that hosts a variety of geese, raptors, shorebirds and waders. Dance party
A dance featuring live music and “a great floor” takes place every Monday from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Moose Lodge, 4328 Campton Road, Eureka. Admission is $9.
Poetry and music
On Nov. 17 at 7 p.m., poetry meets jazz with local poet Jerry Martien, the RLA Jazz Trio and Gary Lewis, sax/flute.
This retrospective show will be held at Trinidad Town Hall, where Martien began the nurturing of his writing about 40 years ago, with his book “The Rocks Along the Coast.”

Since his first chapbook, Martien has published and performed his poetry in multiple venues throughout Humboldt County and Northern California. Beginning in the 1970s, he hosted a long-running poetry series at Arcata’s Jambalaya Club, was a coordinator and poet-teacher with California Poets in the Schools and taught creative writing for a decade at Cal Poly Humboldt. He has contributed to multiple anthologies, most recently, “Make It True: Poetry From Cascadia,” and has published numerous poetry chapbooks and three collections of his poems, most recently “Infrastructure: Dreams, Divinations & Dispatches From The Underground.”
League honorees
The League of Women Voters of Humboldt County will host the annual State of the Community Luncheon in April 2024. Each year the League honors local individuals and/or groups for their civic contributions.

The LWV of Humboldt County is a nonpartisan political organization dedicated to encouraging the informed and active participation in government. LWVHC organizes candidate forums, registers voters and provides pro and con information about ballot initiatives.
