Melissa Gilbert, the 59-year-old star of Little House On The Prairie, has launched an app for her lifestyle brand, Modern Prairie, aimed at older women. Gilbert co-founded Modern Prairie a year ago with retail and merchandising expert Nicole Haase. In an interview with People, Gilbert expressed her belief that the retail industry has underestimated the spending power and desires of women her age. She explained that older women have been marginalized and pigeonholed as either spaced-out old ladies or cranky old women. Gilbert aims to create a community through Modern Prairie where women can connect and support each other.
The app, which has been launched as part of Modern Prairie, is intended to provide a space for women to connect and share experiences. Gilbert herself uses the app daily and has witnessed women supporting each other through various life changes. They discuss topics such as empty-nest syndrome, grief, and hobbies like embroidery and baking. Gilbert, known for her role as Laura Ingalls Wilder in the Little House On The Prairie series, emphasized the importance of knowing that one is not alone and that there is always someone there to provide support.
Modern Prairie offers clothing and home goods inspired by the values of love, community, and family portrayed in the Little House books and TV series. The products are made by women-owned or women-run businesses. Gilbert, who lives on a 14-acre farm in New York with her husband Timothy Busfield, described their everyday activities together, including cleaning the chicken coop, playing backgammon, and cooking. Gilbert and Busfield have been married since 2013 and support each other in embracing aging naturally.
Melissa Gilbert’s journey with Modern Prairie and her new app highlights the need for a space where older women can connect and support each other. The app provides a platform for discussions and sharing experiences, promoting a sense of community and empowerment among older women. Gilbert’s commitment to embracing aging naturally and her emphasis on love and support within her relationship with Busfield serve as positive examples for women of all ages. With the 50th anniversary of Little House On The Prairie approaching, Gilbert’s launch of the app and her dedication to her Modern Prairie brand demonstrate her ongoing commitment to empowering and connecting women.
