Sweden’s largest egg producer, CA Cedergren, has been ordered to euthanize all of its 1.2 million chickens after a salmonella outbreak. The facility will undergo a complete cleaning process. The Swedish Board of Agriculture has given up on cleaning the hen houses due to recurring salmonella outbreaks. The cleaning attempts were unsuccessful, and now the board has decided to take a different approach. It is unclear how many chickens will be killed. In the past year, CA Cedergren has experienced several salmonella outbreaks, leading to a shortage of eggs in July. The eggs from CA Cedergren were mainly used in the food industry, where they were heated to kill any salmonella. Ordinary consumers will not be affected by the culling. Symptoms of salmonella infection include fever, diarrhea, vomiting, and dehydration.
