Ryan O’Neal, Star of “Love Story,” Dies at 82
Ryan O’Neal, who rose to fame in the 1970 film “Love Story,” passed away on Friday at the age of 82. His son Patrick confirmed the news on Instagram, although the cause and location of his death were not disclosed.
O’Neal had a prolific career in both film and television spanning over 50 years. However, he reached the pinnacle of his fame with his role in “Love Story.” At the time, he was a relatively unknown actor, but his portrayal of Oliver Barrett IV garnered him an Academy Award nomination.
Despite his initial success, O’Neal’s career never reached the same heights. He continued to act in notable films like “Barry Lyndon” and “A Bridge Too Far,” as well as comedic roles in movies directed by Peter Bogdanovich. He also starred alongside his daughter Tatum in the acclaimed film “Paper Moon,” which earned her an Academy Award at the age of 9.
However, O’Neal’s personal life was plagued with troubles. His family faced legal issues, drug problems, and strained relationships. O’Neal himself had a volatile temperament and had been charged with assaulting his son Griffin in 2007. He later faced drug charges alongside his son Redmond.
Despite the ups and downs, O’Neal continued to work steadily in the 1980s and ’90s, primarily in television. He made appearances in various shows, including a recurring role in “Bones.” His last major project was a reality show with his daughter, which aired in 2011.
O’Neal was born in Los Angeles in 1941 and began his career in show business as a stunt man. He had no formal training as an actor but quickly found success due to his striking looks and underlying intensity. He was married twice, to actresses Joanna Moore and Leigh Taylor-Young, both of which ended in divorce.
O’Neal’s most notable romantic relationship was with actress Farrah Fawcett. The couple were together for nearly 20 years before separating in 1997. They reconciled later, but Fawcett passed away from cancer in 2009. O’Neal released a book in 2012, “Both of Us: My Life With Farrah,” chronicling their relationship.
In 2012, O’Neal revealed that he was undergoing treatment for prostate cancer. This diagnosis came after his battle with chronic myelogenous leukemia, which eventually went into remission.
Ryan O’Neal leaves behind his daughter Tatum, his son Patrick, and other surviving family members whose details are not currently available.
