New research from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) and Sustainable Tourism Global Center (STGC), initiated by the Ministry of Tourism of Saudi Arabia, reveals that the global Travel & Tourism sector is delivering soaring employment opportunities to women and young people around the world.
The research, which analyzed data from 185 countries, highlights the significant role that the Travel & Tourism sector plays in promoting gender equality and youth employment. It shows that in 2019, the sector employed over 54 million women, accounting for 54% of the total workforce. This represents a higher share of female employment compared to the overall global workforce, where women make up 39%. Furthermore, the sector employed over 77 million young people, aged 15-24, accounting for 23% of total employment in the sector.
The findings also indicate that the Travel & Tourism sector has been a catalyst for women’s empowerment, providing them with diverse job opportunities and promoting their economic independence. The sector has proven to be particularly attractive for women due to its flexibility and the wide range of roles available, including in areas such as hospitality, travel agencies, tour operators, and aviation.
The research further highlights the positive impact of the sector on youth employment. It reveals that the Travel & Tourism sector has been successful in engaging and empowering young people, offering them opportunities for growth and development. The sector’s ability to provide entry-level positions, internships, and apprenticeships has been instrumental in enabling young individuals to gain valuable work experience and acquire the necessary skills to advance in their careers.
However, the research also sheds light on some challenges that need to be addressed. It emphasizes the importance of promoting gender equality at leadership levels within the Travel & Tourism sector, as women continue to be underrepresented in higher positions. Additionally, the research calls for more efforts to bridge the gender pay gap and ensure equal opportunities for career progression for women.
In conclusion, the research highlights the positive impact of the Travel & Tourism sector in providing employment opportunities for women and young people around the world. It emphasizes the need for continued efforts to promote gender equality and create a supportive environment that enables women and young individuals to thrive in the sector.
