A British man and his family are unable to leave the Gaza Strip due to the dangerous conditions at the border with Egypt. This comes after two failed attempts to leave the besieged territory. While some UK citizens have been allowed to depart through the Rafah crossing, Dr Ibrahim Assalia and his family remain near Gaza City and are unwilling to risk the journey to the border. Dr Assalia had traveled to the region a few months ago to help his father access medical care in neighboring Egypt or Jordan, but his father passed away in October. He attempted to leave Gaza before Israel’s ground incursion, but was told to turn back. On the second attempt, the border was closed again. Dr Assalia expressed concerns about the safety of his family and the lack of information about the situation. He also mentioned that his wife has run out of medication for her epilepsy and pharmacies in Gaza do not have any left. Dr Assalia criticized the Foreign Office for not doing enough to help British citizens in Gaza and expressed disappointment in the lack of priority given to UK nationals by Israel and Egypt.
