Anton Enus, the host of SBS World News, has been working behind the desk since 1999. Prior to his current role, Enus spent 15 years at South Africa’s national broadcaster, SABC, where he was part of the team that covered the country’s return to democracy in 1994. Enus, who was born in Durban, migrated to Sydney with his partner, Roger, to take up his position at SBS.
In an interview, Enus reveals the special item that he would save from his house in a fire. He recounts a hiking expedition in the late 1980s when he and Roger were avid hikers. During a trip to Eswatini (formerly known as Swaziland), they visited a local market where Roger bought Enus a necklace made of earth-brown nuts and seedpods. Though not something he would wear, Enus treasures the necklace and it has become a permanent fixture in their apartment, draped over an artwork.
Enus also shares the most useful object he possesses, which is actually two pots given to him by his grandmother, Lily. Despite their age, the pots have remained durable and are still used by Enus in his cooking. He believes that his grandmother’s culinary skills are passed down through the pots, which hold sentimental value for him.
Lastly, Enus discusses an item that he regrets losing. As a child, Enus lived in a rented house in Durban that had a large concrete baboon guarding the front door. The baboon, though intimidating, remained untouched due to its weight. When Enus’s family relocated to the Western Cape, they took the baboon with them. However, it eventually disappeared during a subsequent move, leaving behind a sense of nostalgia and intrigue.
Anton Enus continues to co-host SBS World News, which airs on weeknights at 6:30pm.
